Erinsville’s Maddi Wheeler continued her winning ways south of the border as her Wisconsin Badgers defeated the Northeastern Huskies 2-1 on Sunday to capture the NCAA women’s hockey title.

Her teammate Daryl Watts scored in overtime to lift the Badgers to victory in the championship game, which was held in Erie, Pennsylvania. For Wisconsin it marked their sixth NCAA women’s hockey title, tying them with Minnesota for most in NCAA history.

The win caps a strong freshman season for Wheeler, who had two goals and two assists in her first 19 NCAA games. She finished +6 on the season.

Along with a NCAA title, Wheeler has also won gold at the 2019 IIHF U-18 Women’s World Championship, followed by silver in 2020. Prior to being recruited to Wisconsin she led the NDSS Golden Hawks to a KASSAA title in 2018-19.
