Loyalist to host Family Fishing Day May 11 on Amherst Island

Loyalist Township will be hosting a Family Fishing Day event on Amherst Island in connection with Ontario’s Free Family Fishing Events, on Saturday, May 11.

The fun will take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Stella Bay Park and Dock located at 5220 Front Road, Stella, Amherst Island. This event is a drop-in style event, so anglers can join in the fun at any time between those hours. Pre-registration is required.

This family friendly event will feature fun games, crafts, face-painting, live music, cash BBQ and, of course, fishing from the dock.

Industry professionals will also be on hand with booths to showcase and share water safety tips and information on invasive species, natural habitats, impact of pollution, and much more.

The Neilson Store Museum and Cultural Centre will also be open for the day, so visitors can head into the museum to learn about the history of Amherst Island.

Everyone is encouraged to bring a fishing rod or two, life jackets, and join in the fun.

The Ontario Family Fishing Events are a province-wide opportunity for Canadian residents to fish Ontario waters for free. The Ontario Government has designated four weekends throughout the year as free fishing, and Saturday, May 11 is one of those dates.

The event is free for all to enjoy; however, pre-registration is required. A cash barbecue will be available at the event and ferry crossing fares are required for motorists and cyclists. Pedestrians can board the Amherst Island ferry at no charge. A free shuttle will be available for those interested.
