Napanee’s Walter Gerow Jr. left for Detroit, MI, where he would be given a tryout with the Detroit Red Wings hockey team, which was managed by former Napanee resident Jack Adams.
Gerow, 21-years-old and listed at six feet, 190 pounds, was a local star in both baseball and hockey spheres.
Ken Murphy, another well-known young sportsman developed in Napanee, was also headed to Detroit for a try out with the Red Wings.

The ongoing wage dispute between Quinte Regional Detention Centre correctional workers and the Ministry of Correctional services was headed to arbitration, said a local union spokesperson.
QRDC workers on Sept. 25, 1989, voted about two-to-one against a tentative wage increase settlement of $1.06 to $17.81 an hour. That tentative wage increase was announced Aug. 30 of that year.
The QRDC vote followed what seemed to be the norm across the province, as nearly 3,000 Ontario Public Services union members had cast ballots on the matter of a pay increase, with 66 per cent voting in favour of rejecting it.
-The Village of Bath was looking to join the blue-box recycling movement, underway in Kingston since Sept. 24, 1989 and four surrounding municipalities.
Ernestown Township reeve and chairman of the recycling corp. Ian Wilson received a letter from Bath clerk administrator June Carruthers citing an interest in joining the program.
Ernestown Township council voted to review the fall deer hunt in Prince Edward County before deciding whether or not they’d add a season of controlled deer hunting in their region.
In an effort to solve the lack of affording housing in Deseronto, council invited a Ministry of Housing analyst to offer alternatives to the problem.
