A Religion Vacation School, the first of its kind in the diocese, was brought to a close at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Napanee.
The school was attended by 90 students aged six to 18 under the direction of three sisters of charity from the House of Providence in Kingston, assisted by Dean Leacy, the reactor of the church.

The school came to a close with a brief service in which the students sang a Latin hymn they had learned during their two weeks attendance at the school.

-The county Old Timers showed the Napanee Old Timers they were still up for a game of baseball when the two clubs met at Napanee’s Gibbard Park, with the county beating the town 10-6.

The game was arranged by the Lions Club of Napanee as a benefit for Jimmie White, who had broken his ankle when playing in a game for the club against the Mic Maks. A reported $45 was netted from the fundraising game.

Following strong recommendation by deputy reeve Tom Hogeboom, Richmond council tabled a motion for a proposed private study concerning amalgamation with Napanee at their regular meeting on Aug. 8, 1989.

Hogeboom claimed a study would be a waste of money as the province was already in the midst of a study of their own on the matter of amalgamation.

Councillor Frank Collins pushed for the study to take place anyway, stating he wouldn’t trust the government’s findings.

The motion to put the study on hold was ultimately passed.

-Acknowledging a 1,500 name petition, Ontario premier David Peterson said he would investigate the closure of child care facilities on school premises by the Lennox and Addington County Board of Education.

The premier was met with boos and chants while visiting Kingston.

-A fatal two-vehicle collision at the corners of Hwy. 2 and Hwy 49 a week earlier prompted the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte to contact the Ministry of Transportation and Communications about the problems at that intersection.

The Mohawks had held several council meetings about the intersection and were hoping to get help from the province on the matter.
