Letter: Asphalt plant would defile Napanee

I agree with the prophetic words of Joni Mitchell, “Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone”.

Do you remember when you were a kid and you found a bird nest full of fledglings? You watched the mother show her young how to raise their little white tufted bloomers over the side so they didn’t make a mess in the nest. If town council passes the by-law zoning amendment allowing R.W. Tomlinson Ltd. licence to operate a hot asphalt plant in town, Napanee’s nest will forever be defiled.

We recently purchased a condo under construction at the Gibbard District, just 1.25 km from the proposed asphalt plant; a condo marketed as “environmentally friendly small town living at its finest. Hike, golf, fish, kayak and boat. Napanee’s natural beauty is one of its most cherished features.” After investing our life savings into our ‘dream home’, I won’t even be able to go outside without a gas mask and earplugs.

With an asphalt plant so close to residential neighbourhoods, farms, schools, parks, historic downtown, and the Quinte watershed and Napanee River, heavy air and water pollution and a horrible stench will forever be associated with Napanee. The public health, social, economic and environmental costs will be staggering. What kind of legacy is this to pass to our children?

“They paved paradise, put up a parking lot,” Or in this case, a hot asphalt plant on the east side of town.

It’s not too late. Be proactive. Stop this atrocity from happening to Napanee.
