Deseronto’s late comeback attempt fell just short as the Bulldogs lost 5-3 to the Gananoque Islanders Saturday night at home in Eastern Ontario Super Hockey League action.

Down a goal with time winding down in the third, the Bulldogs opted for an extra attacker but couldn’t bang home the equalizer. Gananoque’s Ben Blasko snuffed out any ideas of a late rally with an empty net goal with just 24 seconds left to play.

Jordan Cannons, Luigi Martone and Austin Collins each scored for Deseronto, who never led at any point throughout the game but did come back to tie it once and twice fought back to within a goal.

Trevor Withers took the loss, stopping 35 of 39 shots.

The Bulldogs actually outshot their opponents 46-40 on the night but it wasn’t enough as they dropped their fourth in a row. Deseronto will look to right the ship as they hit the road this weekend, travelling to Frontenac to face the Phantoms at 8:15 p.m.

The Bulldogs and Phantoms are currently tied for fifth in the six team West division. The Bulldogs are 3-9-0-1 on the year in 13 games while the Phantoms are 3-8-0-1 in 12 games.
