Coles’ Notes

The staff of the County of L&A Libraries are avid readers and always eager to share their favourite books. Here we bring you a list of some of the reads we’ve enjoyed this month, including a romantic short story collection, an intriguing family drama, and a horror novel about killer mermaids.

Julie recently enjoyed We Rip the World Apart by Charlene Carr

“This book will rip your heart apart as Kareela struggles to come to terms with where she fits into society while struggling to decide whether she should keep the child she carries and bring it into the uncertain world.  This book covers the important issues of Black Lives Matter, a woman’s choice over her own body and past trauma in a thought provoking heartbreaking way that will have you turning the pages until the very end.”

Kristin recently enjoyed Scattered Showers by Rainbow Rowell

“Rainbow Rowell has earned fans all over the world thanks to her ability to write meaningful stories about falling in love that feels true and relatable to readers of all ages and backgrounds. Scattered Showers is a collection of nine stories, four previously published and five brand new for this book. Long-time fans of this author will be thrilled to find familiar characters make appearances within these pages, but there is also plenty of new content for fans to swoon over!”

Robin recently enjoyed The Curious Incident of the Dog in Night-Time by Mark Haddon

“The narrator of the story, a 15-year-old boy, Christopher Boone has a wonderfully analytical brain. He is autistic and accustomed to daily routines, he is forced into an unexpected situation when he finds his neighbour’s dog dead. Christopher’s attempt to identify the killer takes him on a journey that includes becoming a possible suspect himself and facing the “whys” of the end of his parents’ marriage.  Christopher provides an unemotional telling of an extremely emotional situation which provides some insightful moments for the reader. At times funny, other times incredibly sad… add in the mystery, it made for a great read!”

Marg recently enjoyed The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins

“Ruby McTavish was born into extreme wealth and led a charmed life until at the age of three, when she was abducted from the family property in North Carolina. A year later she was returned under bizarre circumstances and life continued as before despite the fact that there were extended family members who doubted that it was the real Ruby who came back. Many years and four husbands later, Ruby dies leaving the Ashby estate to her adopted son Camden. Needless to say, her sister Nelle and Nelle’s family are enraged that the McTavish fortune would go to someone who wasn’t even blood. The Heiress is a dysfunctional family drama filled with passion, intrigue, and well-timed plot twists that shows that money may just be the root of all evil.”

Savannah recently enjoyed Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant

“Seven years after her sister (and crew) disappeared while filming a mockumentary about mermaids, Tory Stewart, now a marine biologist researching sonar, joins the crew of the Melusine. Lead by a representative of the entertainment company who backed the original mockumentary and a cadre of scientists and big game hunters, the Melusine sets out to prove the that mermaids do exist – and they’re not the kind that have sing-a-longs with crabs and flounder fish. This sci-fi adventure takes a turn into chilling horror with a diverse cast of characters (most of whom) you want to get out unscathed as they piece together they mystery and try not to get torn to pieces themselves.”
