In praise of public libraries

Public libraries developed out of the same democratic surge that saw the rise of public schools.  Inclusive and welcoming, public libraries were envisioned as places where all citizens would be welcome. All could seek knowledge and self- improvement regardless of social rank, wealth, age, gender or place of origin.

Today, the local public library continues to embody democratic values. Among others, these could relate to: lifelong learning, literacy for all, intellectual freedom and a deep sense of community. As technological change grows in force, some critics question the relevance of the public library. Is there even a place for it in our modern society?

Today’s libraries have much more than books. Our libraries offer free access to all types of resources – print and digital. Items can be ordered province wide at no charge. The library is a guardian of local heritage. It provides information on present and future career opportunities. The library supports students of all ages.  It is a cost effective education and training resource and it is in our own backyard. Not all people can afford to own the latest computer technology or buy the latest hardcover best seller.  Professional staff can recommend a good read or assist with computer/technology training and trouble shooting .

The library can also serve as a sanctuary; a place to relax or escape.  It can be a place to enhance personal skills and job readiness. The library is an actual building and that is another advantage. It remains a community hub hosting many local groups and meetings.  Book clubs, artist displays, crafts, children’s programs and study groups are just a few of the offerings. All ages are still welcome. No one is too young or too old to benefit from a visit to the public library. And there is no admission fee.

Going forward, libraries will continue to adapt to constant change. May we continue to value and support our public library system.

Special thanks to the dedicated and talented library staff both here in Napanee and across Lennox & Addington County. You are appreciated.
