Twenty NDSS Golden Hawks cross-country runners weathered the chilly conditions during the KASSAA championship, held at Little Cataraqui Creek on Oct. 18, each finishing the course and qualifying for EOSSAA.
NDSS’ first group of runners were novice girls (4 km), which included Piper Ballance (fifth out of 26 runners), Lindsay Muli (10th), Rachel Burnett (7th) & Carrie Sywyk (18th). This Novice crew came in second place for overall team placement in their race.
Next up were NDSS’ junior girls (5 km), featured Kaiah Weese (second), Gabby Stacey (third) and Theresa Kerr (sixth).
“With these amazing team results, they would have been the first overall team, but they are missing a member, you must have four runners to make a team, which is unfortunate,” said NDSS cross country coach Krista Walker. “These three girls are phenomenal individual runners. Top performance from all of them today.”

NDSS’ junior boys (5km) saw Nate Stacey come in first place out of 31 runners.
“He has been an amazing runner to watch grow and excel over this season,” said Walker. “He is content, humble and makes it look so easy. Such a smooth confident runner. Francis Konietschke also ran the junior race coming in 25th. His dedication to running and improving himself has showed all season. He hasn’t missed a practice and sometimes even rides his bike to school from Marlbank.”
NDSS’ senior girls (6km) was a team of six runners. Jordyn Everson (seventh), Katie Buchan (10th), Vienna Ballance-Hinch (14th), Lauren Munroe (26th), Nara Rickard (27th), Robyn Moffat (29th) and Liz Miller (37th). There were 49 runners total in their division. This team came in fourth overall with their top-four running scores.
Senior boys (6km) results saw Jack Gregory place first, Jaelin Dell (19th), Marcus Barber (28th) and Jack Rouleau (29th).
“This was a heartfelt race and such sportsmanship came across the finish line,” said Walker. “Jack Gregory officially came first in this race but crossed the finish line side by side with another running teammate from his club team. This NDSS senior boys team came in fifth as an overall team.”
NDSS’ runners are set for this Thursday’s EOSSAA meet at Petawawa, aiming for a top five finish in their division to advance to OFSAA, as well as the top two teams in a division.
