Cullen Hinds played hero for the Deseronto Bulldogs, scoring late in the third period to lift his team to 6-5 win over the visiting Madawaska Valley Wolves on Saturday night.

That goal capped a wild finish to a back-and-forth affair the saw the Bulldogs holding a narrow lead for most the game but never quite able to pull away. Though the Wolves scored the first goal of the game, the Bulldogs were able to respond just four minute later and proceeded to hold leads of 2-1, 3-1, 4-2 and 5-3 before the Wolves finally found a way to score twice unanswered.

The Bulldogs were able to weather the storm however and score the all important go-ahead goal and then survive the white-knuckle finish.

Mitch Gustavsen notched Deseronto’s first two goals on the night en route to a hat trick. Taylor Best chipped in with a goal as well, giving the ‘Dogs a 4-2 lead at the time.

With the win the Bulldogs improve to 5-1 on the season, leading the Eastern Ontario Super Hockey League’s Highlands Division by one point over the Tweed Oil Kings and six ahead of the Wolves and seven better than the Lindsay Barncats.

The Bulldogs will be on the road in Smiths Falls to face the Rides on Nov. 9 and will return home to face them again on Nov. 23 at the Deseronto Community Arena with a 6:30 p.m. puck drop.
