Greater Napanee’s annual earth day clean up will see a few changes for this year but the basic premise remains the same-volunteers pitching in to do a little outdoor spring cleaning on April 27.
The first difference is that the event, which was founded and run for over a decade under the leadership of Good Friends of the Earth’s Barry Robinson, is now being run by the Town of Greater Napanee. Also a bit different this year is the fact that the cleanup takes place a week after Earth Day, due to the fact the third Saturday of April also happens to fall on the Easter long weekend this year.
“We’re still going to provide participants with the equipment necessary for the cleanup, the sticks, the bags, the gloves, that kind of thing,” explains Brianna Clement, communications intern for Greater Napanee. “It’ll happen throughout Greater Napanee so we’re currently looking for participants who want to volunteer with us. They can sign up online or show up the day of and fill out a registration form and then they can choose the area in Greater Napanee they clean up that day.”
Filled bags can be left at the side of the road and town staff will come by to dispose of them. Anyone interested in taking part can drop by the Napanee Metro prior to 9 a.m. on April 27 and the cleanup will run until noon. They can also register online under the greaternapanee.com events page.
“We’ll be doing blasts on social media with facts and FYIs on how people can reduce litter, that kind of thing,” Clement says of the week following Earth Day and leading to the clean-up date.
