Beaver Staff

The Town of Greater Napanee will hold a special dedication service on Aug. 27 to mark the 100th anniversary of the passing of Const. Richard Arnold Beard, who was killed in the line of duty.

The service will be held at 11 a.m. on John Street, just north of Dundas Street in downtown Napanee and will be 100 years to the day of Beard’s passing.

On Saturday Aug. 27, 1921, Const. Beard of the Napanee Police Force responded to a robbery at Smith’s Jewelry Store in Napanee. Beard courageously confronted three suspects in an alleyway and was shot and killed while protecting his community.

A plaque honouring Beard will be mounted in a Police Call Box located on John Street.

Greater Napanee Town Council, local police services and community members will be in attendance for the unveiling of the memorial.
