Greater Napanee will once again fly the rainbow flag at North Fred Hall in recognition of June’s Pride Month.

Council made the motion at the request of Dug Stevenson, executive director of the Bay of Quinte Regional Marketing Board.

Greater Napanee first flew the flag last year, following through on a delegation made by Chris Beauchesne in 2019 who requested the town recognize Pride Month.

Though Stevenson suggested the town fly the flag at town hall, Greater Napanee’s flag raising policy stipulates the flag will fly at North Fred, in part because there’s no suitable flagpole at town hall.

In recognition of its support of Pride Month, the Bay of Quinte Marketing Board will highlight Greater Napanee as being a welcoming place for members of the LGBT+ community.

“We want to play an active role in ensuring our region recognizes gender and sexual diversity and has meaningful practices in place to ensure LGBT+ travellers have an inclusive and positive experience while here,” Stevenson wrote in his letter to council.

As part of the proclamation, Bay of Quinte Marketing is encouraging its partner communities to engage in activities such as rainbow crosswalks as well as other actions to show they welcome members of the LGBT+ communities.

Council voted unanimously to declare June to be Pride Month within Greater Napanee.
