Greater Napanee nearing full circle

Thank you to Greater Napanee councillors (except Councillor Bill Martin) for your generous allotment of garbage bag tags. The 50 bag tags (two households) plus the eight tags we already had will, at our current rate of use, last 15 years or until 2038. Because we could easily “survive” until the next 100 tags come in 2024, we will take Ron Murray’s advice (Letter to the Editor May 11 edition of The Napanee Beaver) and offer them back for a refund.

If the bag tags are non-refundable, our 2024 allotment of 100 bag tags combined with the tags we already have will enable us to have garbage disposal for the next 40 years or until 2063. Our grandchildren may have some of our tags to use.

We fortunately have a large quantity of items which we recently realized are ‘garbage’. Because we don’t want to ‘waste’ our valuable tags, we are happy to have a good use for them. The time required to collect and bag them will be far less than the time currently needed to prepare (and wash) our recyclables. The ‘convenient’ items will still go in the Blue Box. The remainder can easily be bagged and tagged. When we eventually run out of garbage, we can let our less-fortunate neighbours in adjacent municipalities assist in filling our garbage bags.

In a very few years Greater Napanee could make a full circle:

Garbage Only -> Garbage and Recycling -> Garbage Only

Quite an accomplishment!

There may be an opportunity for statisticians to re-estimate the life expectancy of the waste disposal site. Information published in The Napanee Beaver of May 18, 2023 stated that South Fredericksburg site has 39 years remaining. Our only advice is avoid obtaining more garbage trucks. It would be more cost-effective to re-purpose some soon-to-be ‘under-utilized’ recycling trucks.
