The Christmas tree in front of Greater Napanee’s town hall will glow red until Feb. 14 in memory of Xóchitl Azul Rivera.

The 10-year-old student of Kingston’s Mother Teresa Catholic School died Jan. 31 when she was struck by a truck in front of the school.

On Tuesday afternoon the town held a small tribute outside of town hall in honour of their neighbours.

“The Town of Greater Napanee extends our deepest condolences to the family at Mother Teresa catholic School that lost their beloved daughter,” Mayor Marg Isbester said. “We express our sympathy to the entire Mother Teresa Catholic School and Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board communities during this time of loss.”

Algonquin and Lakeshore District School Board Director of Education David DeSantis, Superintendent of Education Carey Smith-Dewey and Mother Teresa Catholic School principal Stacey Porter were on hand for the ceremony.

“On behalf of our senior team of board trustees, the Mother Teresa Catholic learning community would like to thank the Town of Greater Napanee for their outpouring of affection, their condolences and continued partnership,” said DeSantis. “I thank you for your sympathies conveyed to Mother Teresa, the Rivera family sends their thanks as well.”
