Gamble, Edith Mary (nee Gilfedder)

Edith graced this earth and our hearts with her kind, witty spirit from July 5, 1924 until April 16, 2023. Her father Thaddeus Gilfedder immigrated from Ireland when he was 17. Her Mother, Mary McGinn, was born in Montreal after her parents immigrated from Newfoundland. Edith was the second of five children, brother Patrick and sisters Sheila, Moira and Jean. Edith grew up in Verdun, Quebec. There she attended Saint Willibrord Primary School and later Saint Willibrord High School. The Gilfedders spent their summers in Otterburn Park at the cottage on the shore of the Richelieu River. Edith loved the water, was an excellent swimmer and spent many hours at the Otterburn Park Rowing Club. It was there she met Albert who had just returned from serving as a Pilot in WW2.They were married in Verdun in 1949 and celebrated their reception at the lodge on top of Mont Royal. Edith and Albert lived in Montreal where they raised two sons: Geoffrey (Beverly) and Peter (Patricia). Later in life Edith decided it was time to pursue a formal education. At age 65 she graduated from Concordia University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 2001 Edith and Albert moved to Picton where they took up residence in the West Wind on Talbot street. Edith loved to socialize, was a wonderful cook, and spent much of her time bringing people together. Her bridge playing skills were revered by many. Edith was a Beloved Grand Mother to Stacia, Kevin, Lauren and Brittony; a Great Grand Mother to Paxton, Esme, Gage, Max and Atticus; and a Cherished Aunt to many nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by all. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the staff at McFarland Residence and Quinte Healthcare (Picton Hospital) for all the wonderful care they have provided to our Mother over the years! Donations in lieu of flowers to either of these organizations would be deeply appreciated. A Celebration of Edith’s life will be held June 24, 2023 at the Sophiasburgh Town Hall in Prince Edward County at 2:30 pm, 2771 County Road 5, Demorestville, Municipality of Prince Edward County.
