Canadian champion fiddler Scott Woods and his band will be back in Napanee on June 10 to perform at Trinity United Church.

Accompanied by piano, accordion, additional fiddlers and renowned step-dancer Leo Stock, Woods’ Old Fashioned Hoedown show will offer a bit of everything.

Woods is no stranger to the Napanee area, having played Trinity United a handful of times, both his Christmas special and his regular show.

“This particular show is called Old Fashioned Hoedown and features more fiddling than some of our other shows which have been a bit more country music with more vocals,” explains Woods. “We have vocals and we have country music for sure, but we’ve got a great piano player from Quebec joining us on this Old Fashioned Hoedown. He knows every fiddle tune out there. I can play anything and I can’t stump him and he’s just a great fit for our show. He covers the bass with the left hand of the piano, so we’re able to do some different fiddle tunes that are more abstract, Don Messer kind of tunes.”

Germain Leduc will handle the piano and additional fiddle, Stock will both dance and play some fiddle while Kendra Norris plays fiddle, clarinet, saxophone, accordion and vocals.

Between songs will feature a bit of comedy mixed with inspirational stories in the style made famous by Tommy Hunter.

Woods himself is known not only for his great fiddling, but also the many tricks he performs while playing from balancing on a barrel to summersaulting. When COVID completely shutdown the entertainment industry Woods resorted to long haul truck driving for employment. When it became time to hit the road again-this time as a musician-he admits to having some doubt as to whether or not he’d still be able to pull of his acrobatics.

“I thought boy I’m sitting in this truck doing long haul to the U.S, Texas and Oregon and all up and down the east coast,” said Woods. “I was sitting there for hours on end munching on cookies and stuff that my mom packed for me. Luckily I didn’t stick with it too long, it was only a couple of years during COVID so I’m still able to do the summersault, the walk on the barrel and a few other tricks. The flipping fiddler continues.”

Tickets for the show, which gets underway at 7 p.m. can be found at https://scottwoods.ca/event/napanee-on-old-fashioned-hoedown/. The cost is $45 with proceeds going towards the maintenance fund for Trinity United Church. The church is located at 25 Bridge St. E.
