Finding courage in the amid tragedy

If this week’s edition of the Napanee Beaver had a theme, it would be one of perseverance through extraordinarily difficult circumstances.

The story of local mom Tamara Spearing is one of great courage, finding the strength to speak about the devastation of losing her daughter, who passed away before the age of three from complications following a premature birth. As the one-year anniversary of her daughter’s tragic passing approaches next month, Spearing continues to be a great resource for parents who are faced with a similar adversity. While most would rather not talk about the horrors of premature birth or the passing of a young child, Spearing is inclined to break those taboos for the benefit of those going through it.

Her willingness to put herself out there and discuss such a difficult topic is an inspiration. Only a parent who has lost a child can ever truly relate to someone going through the same trauma. That’s why it’s important that those willing to be that voice are encouraged and celebrated. Undoubtedly it must be very difficult in many ways for her to share the story of Gwendolyn time and time again. No one would blame her if she didn’t want to talk about it. Her strength and desire to do so is incredible and a great way to turn a tragedy into something of a positive. Spearing’s foundation, the Gwen Effect, was brought to this reporter’s attention through Alexandra Grant, who graciously offered to donate any money raised during her upcoming Jack and Jill to the worthy cause.

Tragic as Gwen’s passing was, it won’t be in vain. Her mom’s quest will ensure her memory lives on and serves to make the community around her a better place.

The second story of turning grief into positive energy comes from Canadian folk superstar Sèan McCann, who happened to be in Napanee on Sunday for a solo concert.

McCann is best known for helping to found the band Great Big Sea, one of the top-selling artists Canada has ever produced.

In 2013 McCann stunned by fans by announcing he would no longer tour with the band, a revelation that eventually led to the ‘retirement’ of the Great Big Sea brand after 20 years together. In the following months he provided more details, very candidly sharing his struggles with alcoholism.

As a band that specialized in the kitchen party atmosphere while singing sea shanties about drunken sailors, it’s not hard to imagine how tour life would be a challenge for someone battling the demons of alcohol addiction.

McCann is now just as well known for his story of survival as he is a musician. His willingness to share the intimate details of his darkest days, one that almost saw him lose his family, provides inspiration for those with similar struggles.

While both examples of courage in the face of adversity featured in this week’s edition are very different, they do share a common theme. Their stories highlight the value in being willing to talk about issues that all too often are encouraged to be kept quiet. Fortunately there are some willing to speak out for the betterment of those around them.
