Roots and blues trio The Emburys will perform songs of heartbreak and love at Deseronto United Church on June 8.

The concert, which gets underway at 2 p.m., will serve as a fundraiser for the church.

Fronted by lead singer and guitarist Emily Burgess, the Peterborough native also writes a lot of the band’s material as well.

“Usually heartbreak, or just love in general,” Burgess said when asked where she draws her inspiration. “There’s a few songs that aren’t (about heartbreak) but it’s just a way to get your feelings out. Getting them out through song can be pretty cathartic.”

Joining her on stage is Marcus Browne on drums and harmonizing vocals as well as Dawson McManus on bass.

Burgess will be strumming her signature Gibson 339 in the style of her heroes Chuck Berry, Freddie King and SRV. She actually has a license to rock, having graduated with honours from Humber College’s music program, majoring in guitar.

“I started playing guitar at 14 and I didn’t really stop,” she said of her instrument of choice. “I just became obsessed with it. Going to Humber College, this was a way to go to post secondary school for something my parents would be ok with because I’m still going to school, but I got to play music all the time.”

Her set list will include songs from their debut album ‘Are We In Love?” plus a few others.

“We’ve got pretty much a whole other album done, it’s well on its way,” said Burgess. “We’ve got a lot of new songs. We throw in a lot of fun covers as well. We just try to make it an all around fun show.”

Tickets for the show are $20 for adults, $10 for students age 13-18 and free for kids 12 and under. They’re available by calling 613-354-4373 ext. 1 or they will be sold at the door the day of the show. Deseronto United Church is located at 112 Fourth Street in Deseronto.
