As the province’s medical system continues to be strained amid a resurgence of COVID-19 and the incoming flu season, the province’s top doctor is urging Ontarians return to masking while indoors.

Ontario chief medical officer of health Dr. Kieran Moore made the announcement Monday. He cited the rise of COVID-19 cases as well as a spike in respiratory syncytial virus mixed with the typical influenza season.

“What we are facing is a triple threat that requires our collective action,” said Moore. “Action to protect the most vulnerable in our communities, the very young, the very old and those with underlying medical issues and to ensure that our health-care system remains able to care for Ontarians when they need it.”

The former KFLA Public Health medical officer of health turned provincial top doctor also encouraged Ontarians to roll up their sleeves and get their flu shots.

“I’m asking Ontarians, especially children six months of age and older, pregnant individuals, families and caregivers with young children, health-care workers and elderly, and those with underlying health conditions to get your flu shot as soon as possible, [to] protect themselves and those around them,” Moore said.

Flu shots are available across KFLA through a health care provider or a local pharmacist.

For now the call to return to indoor masking remains a recommendation and no mandate has been put in place.
