Both NDSS’ boys and girls curling teams reached the finals of the EOSSAA championships on Monday held in Kingston, both finishing as silver medalists.

Though they each fell just a few rocks short of clinching a berth at OFSAA, the double silver finish marked the first time the Hawks curling program had reached the finals in both divisions.

The NDSS girls were skipped by Reese Hutcheson with Katie Buchan as lead, Julia MacDermaid at second and Hailey Bruce at third.

Tied 7-7 heading into the final end of the semifinals against Frontenac, the Hawks stole a pair to clinch the 9-7 victory.

In they finals they matched up against St. Joseph’s and were right there until the eighth end, ultimately falling 10-7.

That loss was their only one of the tournament after going a perfect 2-0 in their pool to reach the playoff round.

On the boys’ side, Jackson Colazio skipped the team of Logan Harris (lead), Adam Chadwick (second) and Ethan Stein (vice) to a 10-7 win over Perth in the semifinals. That included a six ender in the second end to put them ahead for good.

In the finals they battled Frontenac hard but wound up on the wrong side of a 6-3 score.

In pool play the Hawks went 1-1 to clinch their spot in the medal round.

The silver medals mark the end of an outstanding curling season for Napanee that saw the girls capture gold at KASSAA while the boys earned silver.

Both young teams heading into the season with several players having very little experience on a curling sheet, the Hawks proved to be quick learners. That bodes well for the program going forward as they look to build on their playoff experience.
