What was projected to be a showdown between two heavy weights wound up more of a laugher as the Deseronto Bulldogs shellacked the visiting Smiths Falls Rideaus 10-1 on Saturday night.

Jonny Hill and Jordan Cannons each scored twice while Cullen Hinds, Kris Newbury, Taylor Best, Brodie Maracle, Shawn Mackie and Joey Mayer each added a goal for the home team Bulldogs.

Deseronto built a comfortable 8-0 lead before Nate Watson finally responded for the visitors with 6:27 to go in the third on the power-play. That was the lone blemish on Bailey Maracle’s night as he finished with 48 saves.

The victory gives Deseronto their ninth in a row, climbing to 9-1 (18 points) on the season, extending their lead over the second place Rideaus in the Eastern Ontario Super Hockey League West Division by five points. The Gananoque Islanders are third with 11 points while the Barry’s Bay Wolves are fourth with nine points.

The Bulldogs will next face-off against the Tweed Oil Kings for a road game on Dec. 3. The Oil Kings are fifth in the league with six points, though they’ve played just six games.

That game will represent the start of the second half of the season for the Dogs, with 10 games left to play.

On Dec. 8 the Bulldogs will travel to Frontenac to face the Phantoms before returning home Dec. 16 to host the Phantoms at the Deseronto Community Rec Centre. Game time for their home match will be 6:30 p.m.
