Deseronto Bulldogs can’t overcome slow start in loss to Gananoque Islanders

The visiting Deseronto Bulldogs fell behind early and were never able to recover, falling 5-2 to the Gananoque Islanders on Saturday in Eastern Ontario Super Hockey League play.

The Islanders built a 4-0 lead before the Bulldogs even found their way onto the score sheet.

Eric Selleck and Wyatt Cota scored for the home team in the opening period while Kris Newbury and Ryan Pawlikowski chimed in with one each in the second.

Deseronto’s Joey Mayer broke the shutout with 6:18 left to go in the second with assists from Jordan Cannons and Michael Anson.

Justynn Steven got one back for the Islanders with just over three minutes to go in the frame.

The 5-1 lead held until late in the third when Deseronto’s Chris Rogalsky potted a goal with help from Shamus Barr and Ryan Dreossi.

Nicholas Nabuurs picked up the win, stopping 32 shots.

Cam Parr and Graeme Gemmill both saw action in net for the Bulldogs and faced a combined 66 pucks. Parr allowed two goals on 19 shots while Gemmill turned away 42 and allowed three to cross the line.

The Bulldogs fell to 3-7-0-1 with the loss and sit fifth out of six in the West Division. With seven points they are two up on the Frontenac Phantoms and 17 back of first place Smiths Falls.

The Bulldogs will welcome the Phantoms to the Deseronto Community Rec Centre this Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
