Upgrades to the Hwy 401 interchange at Palace Road are expected to be the topic of discussion at tonight’s public information session, hosted by AECOM.

Speaking at last week’s council meeting ahead of the information session, Greater Napanee councillors said they’d have plenty of questions to raise at tonight’s meeting.

“There is a fair amount of concern about redirecting traffic off the 401 when its shut down,” said deputy mayor Marg Isbester. “Which seems to be a regular event. (There’s concern about) what it does to our town to accommodate that kind of transport traffic.”

Councillor Shaune Lucas is hoping to get some answers as to the long term future of the overpass at Beechwood Road.

“Was there ever any intent or thought of making an on/off ramp there?” asked Lucas. “Now that we’ve opened up Jim Kimmett Boulevard to bypass County Rd. 41 for people going downtown, is that the appropriate time to say what’s the long-term range for that?”

“They’re also going to be talking about another lane going in the 401,” added Mayor Gord Schermerhorn. “That’s something I’ve had a couple of calls about and people are concerned about the top of the hill at Palace Road.”

Council also finalized its budget meeting schedule, circling Dec. 18, Feb. 22, March 8 and March 22 as their dates to talk 2018 finances.

Should a third lane be added to the 401 through Napanee? Have your say on this week’s weekly poll on the home page.
