Works of art created by students of NDSS’s community program can now be found in the art corridor at the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital.
Their creations were made possible thanks to a $1,500 grant from the Community Foundation of Lennox and Addington. That money was used to help the school cover the cost of art supplies.
On Wednesday the students took a trip to the hospital to see their work on display.
“It’s a really important thing for these guys,” said Nancy Yanaky, a teacher with NDSS’ School to Community program. “They’re not always able to get credits and they’re not always successfully academically, but they can do art and it’s amazing what they can do.”
Students in the program have a variety of different learning abilities and don’t attend a traditional classroom. Instead they focus on life skills and explore their artistic side.
“Some of them are completely different independent in doing the art,” said Yanaky.
Among the different art projects they’ll work on this year is canvas painting, water colours, beadwork, printmaking and tie-dye.
Yanaky says completing the project helps to give the students a sense of accomplishment and builds their self-esteem.
NDSS’ School to Community program has about 50 students in it from all grade levels.
The students’ work, which is part of a larger displayer made up of NDSS art class students, will be on display until Feb. 23.
