Communities in Bloom members dropped by Greater Napanee council last week to offer an update on their plans for the summer growing season.

CIB committee member Kathy Medd led a brief powerpoint presentation, highlighting the group’s previous achievements such as reaching a maximum five bloom rating from provincial judges.

“Our plan for this year is, because the municipality is celebrating its 20th anniversary since amalgamation, we’re going to be using a blue and yellow theme in our annual planting,” said Medd. “So you will see things coming up shortly.”

The blue and yellow colour scheme is reflective of the town’s logo.

CIB will also be on hand at the upcoming Riverfront Festival, which goes June 8 and 9 at Conservation Park. They’ll be offering packets of seeds for residents who want to do some planting of their own at home.

Because of downtown construction last year and this year, the local group has again opted not to invite judges to the community for 2018. There is talk however of striving for another provincial five bloom rating and perhaps even the national level in the future. When they do invite judges they call on the entire community to spruce up their properties and take extra care of several green spaces throughout the town.

“The committee believes participation in the program has many positive impacts in the community,” said Medd.

The group will also continue its community garden this year, adoptive gardens and Conservation Park gardens.

-Also at council, a special presentation was made by Sam Salaam, who travelled to Humboldt, Sask. on behave of the township to deliver the town’s donations and well wishes following the tragic bus crash that claimed the lives of 16 members of the local junior hockey team and injured 13 others. Salaam volunteered to deliver the package as he was going to be in the area to attend the graduation of his son.

-Greater Napanee CAO Ray Callery put out a call for volunteers for the upcoming Riverfront Festival. Anyone interested in helping out can contact 613-354-3351 ext 2004. They have a need for volunteers in several capacities.
