Leroy Blugh’s coaching debut with the B.C. Lions will have to wait until next season.
On Monday the Canadian Football league announced they had officially cancelled the 2020 season due to COVID-19. Blugh, a native of Napanee, joined the Lions as a defensive line coach in the offseason after six years in the same role with the Ottawa RedBlacks.
In July he spoke with the Beaver, saying he had been working remotely with the Lions’ defensive players from his home in Napanee to be ready in the event the league was given the green light. The CFL season had originally been scheduled to kick off on June 11 but was delayed due to COVID-19 before ultimately being cancelled earlier today.
In his playing career Blugh played 15 years in the CFL, carving out a hall of Fame career while winning a Grey Cup in 1993.
This year will mark the first time since 1919 there will be no Grey Cup awarded.
