Connor Brooks spun a gem for Canada’s U17 Men’s National Team, tossing a complete game, five inning one-hit shutout against Panama at the Pan American Softball Championship yesterday in Guatemala.
The Napanee native retired the first 14 batters he faced before allowing a two-out single in the top of the fifth. That runner was quickly erased two pitches later with a caught stealing.
Canada finished the game in the bottom half of the inning, scoring a pair of runs to push their lead to 7-0 and invoke the international mercy rule victory.
Brooks picked up six strikeouts while walking just one, lowering his ERA to 4.66 in six innings pitched at the tournament.
At the plate he helped his own cause by drawing two walks and scoring once.
The win was Canada’s third in a row, pushing their record to 3-1. They will face Argentina tonight at 6 p.m. eastern time followed by Belize on Friday at 6 p.m. to wrap up round robin play. The playoffs begin Saturday.
