Big Bright Lights to be discussed at tomorrow’s Greater Napanee council meeting

Greater Napanee town council will hold its first meeting of 2021 on Tuesday night, held via Zoom and broadcast live on the town’s YouTube channel.

Among the items up for discussion will be the fate of the Big Bright Lights, which adorn the downtown businesses along Dundas Street. The Napanee Business Improvement Area has requested that the lights stay up and are continued to be turned on throughout the month of January.

The council meeting’s agenda suggests council will provide direction to town staff to follow one of the following three options:

a)Timers are re-installed and lights are turned on until January 31, 2021

b)Lights remain turned off and are not removed from the facades until March 2021; or

c)Lights are removed from facades beginning the week of January 18, 2021

Taking into consideration:

a) Staff time will be required to re-install timers and fix glitches (not all will be able to be fixed due to light supply);

b) It is safer and provides less disruption along Dundas Street to remove the lights now when fewer cars and pedestrians are present in the downtown area; and

c) Once the provincial lockdown is lifted and if our area moves to Stage Orange, staff resources will be limited for the removal of the lights.
