Anyone interested in finding out more about their family tree or just wanting to conduct a historical property search can come out to the Bath branch of the library Sept. 10th at 10 a.m. for a workshop hosted by Lennox and Addington archivist Kim Kerr.
The workshop will be followed by a questions and answer segment at 11 a.m.
“I’ll be looking at how to use land records from L&A County for doing genealogical research,” said Kerr. “I find people are surprised what they can learn from the property records for putting together their family tree.”
Historical property searches are incredibly useful for genealogists as they can give one insight into where their ancestors lived and when they lived there.
The event includes a rundown on how to learn more about a family and/or community history using an important archival tool.
“I thought this was a valuable workshop,” Kerr stated. “I don’t know if people in the community are aware of the land records we have here in the County Archives and how to use them for genealogical research.”
Kerr has a background in archeology and a Masters in Library and Information Science. She’s always loved history and found this to be the best way to combine all these things to work as an archivist.
Future workshops will take place as follows, Oct.10th 10 a.m. – Tamworth, Nov. 6th 1 p.m. – Amherstview and Dec. 4th 6:30 p.m. – Napanee
“I hope anyone reading this article who has ever been curious how to use land records for genealogical research will come out,” Kerr expressed. “You don’t need experience, you don’t need a plan and you don’t need to have an answer your looking for, it’s just for information and to be aware of what’s available.”
