Greater Napanee Emergency Services fire crews got little sleep as they battled a barn fire in the early morning hours Monday.

The fire took place at a farm on County Road 2, west of Napanee. At the scene, GNES deputy-chief John Koenig said that the call reporting the fire came in shortly after midnight. By 9 a.m., a handful of firefighters remained at the scene to put out hotspots while heavy machinery moved debris.

Koenig said that when firefighters arrived, the structure was fully involved, and that the barn’s silo had already collapsed.

The barn had not been used for some time.

Koenig said that, as yet, no cause had been determined, although the fire was deemed to be suspicious given that there was no electricity to the structure.

Kimberley Richardson, a neighbour, was the first to spot the fire. She said she was alerted by popping noises; he called 911 and notified her neighbours.
