The staff of the County of L&A Libraries are avid readers and always eager to share their favourite books. Here we bring you a list of some of the reads we’ve enjoyed this month.
Patricia suggests The Bodyguard by Katherine Center
“Katherine Center’s The Bodyguard is sure to be hit when it is released in July. Hannah Brooks is an executive protection agent who loves her work and the travel it provides. Jack Stapleton is a famous actor who after tragedy disappeared from the public eye but will now to anything to protect his sick mom from his stalker, a middle aged, sweater knitting dog breeder. To protect Jack’s family and keep his stalker a secret Hannah must go undercover as Jack’s girlfriend. Family drama, romance, a little danger and some ugly sweaters make this humorous, page turning romance one you won’t want to miss.”
Kelly suggests Shadow Life by Hiromi Goto
“Forced to move to an assisted-living facility by her well-intending daughters, Kumiko finds that the new living arrangement is not a good fit for her. She “leaves” the facility without telling her family and finds her own new place to live her remaining years. Finding joy in doing things for herself and by herself, Kumiko is happy living on her own. But, Kumiko quickly realizes that she has an unintended, and unwelcome newness in her life. The shadow of death has come for her and Kumiko is far from ready to go to the new plane. This black and white graphic novel defines Kumiko as a no-nonsense kind of senior who makes her own decisions about her life. Marg suggests Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney
“In an attempt to save their troubled marriage, Amelia convinces her workaholic screenwriter husband Adam to spend a weekend away with her in the Scottish Highlands, a trip she recently won at work. Unfortunately by the time they arrive at the isolated converted chapel in a raging snowstorm nerves are on edge and the mood is anything but romantic. The B&B appears to be deserted and when they finally gain entrance they discover that it as creepy inside as it is on the outside but with weather conditions deteriorating the couple realizes that they are trapped. The tension builds when Amelia sees a stranger peering at them through a window then their dog goes missing and their tires are slashed. It becomes obvious that someone doesn’t want them to leave. In such a secluded location contact with the outside world does not appear to be an option and they realize they are stranded. I have to say, I did not see the twist at the end of this exhilarating novel coming. Perfect for fans of Paula Hawkins, Shari Lapena, and Lisa Jewell.”
Amy suggests My First Outdoor Garden by Phillipe Asseray
“I wholeheartedly agree with Cicero, who said, “If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.” Which is why I was so excited to read this new kids’ gardening book. My First Outdoor Garden by Philippe Asseray has everything young nature lovers need to know to plant and grow their own carrots, geraniums, daffodils and even pineapples. Budding gardeners (pun intended!) will delight in the sweetly illustrated step-by-step instructions and will be proudly showing off their beautiful gardens in no time. There are projects such as constructing a box garden, choosing the right plants and creating compost. Kids will learn how to sow seeds, plant seedlings and water without wasting. If you are looking to grow a reader and a garden you should check out this inspiring and beautiful book.”
