Prior to hitting the stage in Toronto, Edmonton soul songstress Ann Vriend will make a detour to Napanee’s Ellena’s cafe for an intimate Starstop Series performance Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
Vriend, who is touring in support of her album For The People In The Mean Time, has the distinction of being the first-ever artist to perform in the Starstop Series over five years ago. She’ll return tonight with the promise of showcasing her new songs as well as favourites from her previous album Soul Unravelling.
Her latest CD tells tales of her upbringing in a difficult inner city, told through powerful soul beats.
Along with her previous visit to town, listeners may also recognize her from an appearance on the late Stuart McLean’s national treasure known as the Vinyl Café, which was originally broadcast in January 2014 on CBC radio. It has since been replayed a handful of times.
Despite her indie status, Vriend had earned several awards, including a nomination for Pop Album of the Year from the Toronto Independent Music Awards and rave reviews from music critics while selling over 16,000 records. Prior to returning to Canada she wrapped up a tour in Australia. Following tonight’s show she’ll take the stage at Toronto’s Hugh Room.
