Canada-U.S. border tightens security following explosion in Niagara Falls

Canada-U.S. border crossings are on heightened alert this evening following a vehicle explosion on near the American side of the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls, NY.

The Associated Press reports two people were found dead inside the car. Police continue to investigate the situation.

The Rainbow Bridge has since been closed, as has the Queenston Lewiston Bridge in Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Peace Bridge in Buffalo, NY and the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge in NY.

The Thousand Islands Bridge which links Hill Island, Ont. to Wellesley Island, NY remains open, but heavy delays are expected due to increased security.

This comes on one of the busiest travel days between Canada and the U.S. ahead of America’s Thanksgiving.

“In light of today’s incident at the Canada-US border in Niagara Falls, the OPP would like to reassure our communities that there is no known threat to public safety in Ontario at this time,” reads a statement from the OPP. “We will continue to work with our policing and public safety partners to actively monitor the situation.”
