Beaver Staff
As forecasts call for the first significant snowfall of the season tonight, Lennox & Addington Emergency Services is urging residents to be prepared for the weather. Heavy snowfall and ice can make the roads treacherous and interrupt the power supply. Here are a few suggestions they have to make sure residents are ready:
- Check local weather forecasts online. (Weather is available at www.napaneebeaver.ca)
- Listen to local radio or local social media platforms for updates on road conditions, driving information and outage details, etc.
- Check with local school board for information on cancelled classes and buses.
- Check with local municipalities (Addington Highlands, Greater Napanee, Loyalist, Stone Mills) for information on snow removal services.
- Make sure they have an Emergency Survival Kit ready.
Winter Weather Safety Tips
- Avoid unnecessary travel.
- Wear layers of lightweight clothing, mittens and a hat (preferably one that covers ears).
- Wear waterproof, insulated boots to keep feet warm and dry as well as to keep from slipping on ice and snow.
- Regularly check for frostbite — numbness or white areas on the face and body (ears, nose, cheeks, hands and feet in particular).
- Avoid overexertion when shoveling snow by taking frequent breaks.
- Bring pets inside and move livestock to sheltered areas with non-frozen drinking water.
Power Outage Safety Tips
If the power goes out, check with a local power provider for information and updates.
- Turn off appliances and electronics to prevent damage in the event of a power surge when power comes back on.
- Keep fridge and freezer closed. Some food can keep for 24 to 48 hours.
- Stay away from and report downed power lines.
- Avoid water near electrical equipment.
- Don’t use outdoor grills or barbecues indoors.
