Burry served Pastoral Charges of the United Church of Canada in Newfoundland and Labrador and in many communities in Ontario for 50 years. He was deeply loved and highly respected by all those with whom he ministered before and after retirement. He was a progressive thinker, an avid reader, loved discussions and was always respectful of others’ points of view wherever they were on their theological journey. He was inclusive long before inclusivity was championed, connecting with people spiritually, emotionally and in a secular mode. Burry’s love of the written word shone through in his sermons. He had the soul of a poet, was an exceptional storyteller, and used his humour and laughter to connect with people. Burry’s profound sense of empathy and sensitivity enabled his words to create relevance for people in the pews of his churches and he is deeply missed by all who knew him.
The family wishes to thank the nursing and medical staff on the 7th floor of St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital for their incredible support, empathy and loving care. Special thanks also to Burry’s close Ontario friends for their continual love, friendship and support over the years. In accordance with Burry’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral. Visitation will take place 1:00-4:00pm on December 1, 2022 at Barrett’s Funeral Home on 328 Hamilton Avenue, St. John’s, NL. A celebration of Burry’s life to take place at the Lions Hall in Napanee, Ontario, 1:30-4:00pm on January 14, 2023. Donations to be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Society of Newfoundland and Labrador.
