Two fairly evenly matched teams met when Napanee and Bowmanville played at Napanee in the first game of the semifinals for the Intermediate A baseball playoffs. A well played game, Napanee lost to Bowmanville 3-2.

In the second game of the series, played in Bowmanville, the home team won again with a tightly contested 1-0 victory.

During that game Osborne pitched for Bowmanville while Spratt pitched for Napanee. Each pitcher allowed just four hits.

Terry Fox would have been proud of Napanee, as more than $17,500 was raised by 336 participants in the ninth annual Terry Fox Run. That number was more than $2,000 raised in the previous year.

The local run originated from Napanee’s town hall and for the first time, saw two start times-one for adults and one for kids. Not only did the event top the previous year’s in terms of money raised, but 111 more people took part in the run that saw them walk, run or rollerblade their way through town.

Keeping with the ever growing demand of luxury sport sedans, Napanee’s Goodyear plant announced it would be manufacturing a smoother and quieter touring tire.

The Napanee plant was preparing to begin operations on Feb. 15 of that year. To celebrate the new Eagle GA touring tire, 20 journalists from across Canada, including the Napanee Beaver’s Derek Baldwin and Bill Hodgins, were invited to take part in a rally race from Calgary to Banff.

Amherst Islander residents threatened to pull their kids from county registers among an ongoing battle about busing arrangements.

A month before school started, Amherst Island voted against giving school buses the priority on commuter ferry runs, meaning pupils may have to cross on the ferry without a bus. Grade 7 and 8 students, who were supposed to be taking classes at Bath Public School for select subjects twice a day, were refusing to attend those classes as a show of protest.

Teachers within Lennox and Addington County would have to wait a few weeks longer for a new contract, as talks were bumped until October. Their contract had expired on Aug. 31, 1989.
