Scavenger hunters will be dashing through downtown Greater Napanee on Aug. 11 as the Napanee BIA hosts their unique take on the popular reality competition show The Amazing Race.
For an entry fee of $15, teams of two will work together to be the first one to uncover all the puzzle pieces, which will be hidden in local downtown businesses.
“You’ll start off with a clue that leads you to the businesses then once you get to the business you complete a task, and then once you complete that task you get the next clue,” explains Kärin Zätterberg, a summer student with the Napanee BIA.
Those clues will lead contestants to the end of the race with the top three teams winning a prize package donated by local businesses. Each team will also be given a prize for participating.
The race is geared towards students, though as long as one of the participants is a student, there’s no restriction on the age of the second contestant.
“The reason we’re having this for teenagers and young adults is for them to feel more comfortable being downtown and being in the stores downtown,” said Zätterberg. “So that they can start shopping downtown and then maybe one day if they want to open a business, they’ll know downtown is an option for them.”
The entire race will be confined to the downtown core, all within walking distance. The only thing participants will need is a phone that can take photos and record video for some of the tasks. Organizers are also asking that teammates dress in matching colours to help differentiate the teams.
Registration can be done through The Amazing Race Napanee Facebook page or by dropping by the Napanee BIA office, located at 47 Dundas Street E in Napanee. A list of the donated prizes from all the local businesses is also available on the event’s Facebook page.
Registration is open until Aug. 10 and participants must be at the BIA office by 10:45 a.m. on Aug. 11 to begin the challenge.
